New CHALLENGER division for adaptive baseball!

Dear Parents,

The Anacortes Little League is thrilled to announce the inaugural season of the Challenger Division for 2019.  The Little League Challenger Division was founded in 1989, and is Little League’s adaptive baseball program for individuals with physical and intellectual challenges. This is the first year that Anacortes will offer this program and we can’t wait to share our love of baseball with this fantastic group of kids!

Any individual with a physical or intellectual challenge may participate in this division. If an individual can participate in the traditional Little League Baseball or Softball program with reasonable accommodations, they should do so. If your child would feel more comfortable in the Challenger Division, they are welcome to enroll. The Little League Challenger Division accommodates players age 4 to 18; or up to age 22 if still enrolled in high school. Any child that lives in Skagit County can register in the Anacortes Little League Challenger Division including the Anacortes, La Conner, Mt Vernon, Burlington, Sedro Wooley and Concrete school districts.

Teams are made up of all ages and skill levels. Games are non-competitive and focus on developing a love of baseball. Players are supported during practices and games through the help of buddies who are volunteer players that are available to assist in any way necessary to help the Challenger player participate in the game.  Family members, aides, parents, and volunteers can act as buddies as well.  Buddies must be cleared to volunteer with Anacortes Little League, pass a background check, and attend buddy training. The buddy training sessions will be held at the Anacortes Public Library on Sunday, March 24
th from 4 – 5:30pm and on Monday, March 25th from 4:30 – 6 pm. Buddies only need to attend one training session. To register, please email [email protected]

This year’s Challenger Division season will start on Saturday, April 13th with a pre-season practice session for all players. Teams will then be assigned, and practices will start the week of April 22nd. Practices will occur twice a week through May 5th. Games will begin the week of May 6th, occurring twice a week instead of practices, and run through May 26th. The season will finish with a final game and picnic celebration!
Registration is currently open and players can enroll on the Anacortes Little League website at www.anacorteslittleleague.com. For more information, please consider attending one of our Parent Info Sessions which are being held at the Anacortes Public Library on Monday, Feb 25
th from 5 – 6pm and Wednesday, March 20th from 5 – 6pm. To register, please email [email protected].

We hope you will consider enrolling your child in the Challenger Division this year. We look forward to helping your family participate in baseball this season. Please contact Miri Levi, Challenger Coordinator at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Thank you,
